My favorite Drama Queen

Today I made the very short journey to the home of my creative, dream-interpreting, astrology-loving friend, Barbara Emery Johnson, who also lives here in Harwich.  Barbara is colorful, spirited and has a Master's Degree in Expressive Arts.  She facilitates psycho-drama as a form of psycho-therapy. This makes her Master Drama Queen in the best sense of the title.  Barbara and I taught a Mask making class together called 'DreamMask Expresso' (newspaper photos below) and I was a student  of two of her Fairytale workshops for adults.  In the fairytale workshops, the adults got to be children again and act out our favorite fairy tales like 'The Three Little Pigs', 'Goldilocks', etc. to discover the dreamlike quality of the fairy tales and their hidden meanings.  We were fortunate that the class was in The Harwich Junior Theater so, not only was it pulsing with creative energy, but we had access to all of the costumes and stage sets that filled the top floor of the building.  It was so relaxing and fun and a great way to forget daily troubles or at least look at them in a new light.
Anyway, a few months ago, Barbara picked up the DVD, 'Vision' for us and we were very excited to finally have the opportunity to see it together.  ('Vision' is a movie about the medieval nun and scholar Hildegard of Bingen.  Hildegard lived in the 12th century.  She had visions that gave her information on healing by using plants, stones, and music.   She'd be considered radical today, but as a nun in an extreme male-dominated culture, it was fascinating to see how she advanced her principles.) With the pouring rain outside, the dark, and the thunder, it was a perfect day to cozy up with a movie.  Barbara and her family hadn't used a physical DVD at their house in so long that playing it actually turned out to be an unexpected challenge.  So while Barbara was moving us from one TV to another; just like Goldilocks, I tried out the beds and couches in each of her  rooms that had a TV.  To an artist-type like me, Barbara's house is heaven.  It is filled with life, colors, art and creativity.  It's spectacular.

I had only about 5 minutes to take pictures at Barbara's before the movie started so here is what I grabbed to share with you:

This painting was done by Alex, Barbara's daughter.   It is inspired by Thomas Kinkade.  But I don't actually like his work; although I enjoy the imaginative quality of it.  THIS I love.

One small area of Barbara's living room; still festive from the holidays.

This is another painting by Alex.  It is actually painted on an old wooden box.

Don't you love this one?   I think this is also by Alex.  Barbara also has her work in the house along with her other daughter's work (Rose).  So these pieces are just a small taste of what her house has to offer
This painting really appeals to me, but what looks like the moon is actually the light on the glass as I took the photo.   I think I'm going to paint my own painting inspired by this one, with the moon in it.   It will be this month's Wolf moon which rose a few days ago as a huge and a bright orange ball hanging in the sky.

Peek- a- boo
One of the things that endears me to this photo is that Barbara never changed out of her slippers.   She was sure  we would only be photographed from the waist up.   Also, we weren't confident that a photo would even be included in the article.  BUT the next morning, there we were; Barbara's slippers and all!   This photo was large and it was a full page article on the front page of the 'Arts' section with a small photo and teaser on the cover page of the paper.

The caption on this photo says, 'Masks can be creative, expressive and, ironically, revealing.'.

Vie's Snack Shack and Sloop Jones

Handyman Har and I got into his 'chick magnet' (beat up Geo Tracker) and cruised the beautiful road to East End
to see Miss Vie for lunch. Miss Vie is famous for her Garlic Chicken snd Conch Fritters that she sells from a colorful little shack. Going the 10 and 20mph speed limit it's about 20 minutes from Island Cottage, but Harry drove.

East End is hotter, dryer, rocky and more remote than other areas of St. John, but it is incredibly beautiful.

(You can see Miss Vie's little head inside the shack taking this gentleman's order.)

Harry ordered the Garlic Chicken and; since Im a veggie, Miss Vie made me a
delicious Johnny Cake with rice and beans. All wonderful and it is so peaceful eating outside on her picnic tables.

Vie and her family have an incredible beach that they maintain. it's one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. And for just $2.50 you can have it too for a day. She also rents out kayaks. Since it is so remote and there's a fee, there's no one here today. It's awesome.

(Here's a small mural across the street from Vie's - it says 'Bush Cat Snack Shack' . Try saying THAT 3 times fast!)

While we were at Miss Vie's, we met a couple who told us our friend, Marsha, was creating some beautiful clothes up at Sloop Jone's place farther out on East End. Marsha is a sweet, cheerful, creative, woman who, with her husband, spends 1/2 the year here on St John and the other half of the year in Maine. Sloop Jones and his life partner, Linda Alperen, are artists. They have beautiful clothing, totes, signs, paintings and more for sale. ( See www.sloopjones.com)

Marsha explained to us that the Century Plant is the Christmas Tree of St. John. Since she loves this plant, she is painting clothing with her century plant design for her children and grandchildren that are arriving on Christmas Day. I think this piece she's painting above is a little girl's dress.

We Walk on the Wild Side

Handyman Harry and I walked the 5 minute hike to Drunk Bay from very tranquil Salt Pond Bay. It's a wild rocky place where you can see the 'ghosts of pirates' laying on the rocks. Drunk Bay is one of the ruffest, rockiest bays on St John and that's facinating because it is just a 5-10 minute easy walk from the most tranquil bay beach - Salt Pond Beach where we begin our walk.

Salt Pond Beach is beautiful and great for snorkeling. Crystal clear water, lots of fish, rays, octopus, and my favorite- turtles!

Near the end of Salt Pond Beach is the Drunk Bay Trail.

Turks Cap cactus

As you come around a bend there will be the dramatic rocky coast of Drunk Bay

Beachcombing is great here, but please don't try swimming or snorkeling. It's name is a corruption of the word 'drunken' which really means 'drowned ' in Dutch Creole. The waves here have travelled all the way from Africa with nothing to stop them. This wild area is famous for it's shipwrecks.

Over the years people have taken the coral and made their own art and messages on the rocks - there are a lot of pirates smoking and drinking.

Must we always anatomically exaggerate?

A Love City snowman

Drug Smugglers pass the Virgin Islands on their way to Florida so sometimes 'burlap seafood' washes in here. If you find one, your suppose to contact the authorities. Har says, "Are you sure we shouldn't suggest that they should test it first before bothering the very busy local establishment?"
"'Not me, Har, not on my blog."
"Geez, what happened to that wonderful sentiment 'Save the Bales'"

Crabby's

Harry and Doug (the Crab) gazing out at the boats and chatting about good books.

Yesterday Handyman Harry and I spent some time hanging out with The Crab, at Crabby's. Meris, don't you think your Dad should get that 'Don't worry be Crabby' Tshirt? Harry isn't really crabby, but he has moments where he tries to show potential:-).

Oh my gosh! A gecko got into my red paint!

This is a completely unaltered photo. I was working on my mural and the gecko was just hanging out with me. I thought he was cute and then he stuck his lips in my red paint! THEN he stuck around for the photo. I couldn't believe it when he let my camera get so close (I don't have a zoom). He probably thought 'they'll never believe it anyway'.

Life-size, As Any Other

I painted 8 4'x8' paintings of women. They told me how they wanted to be portrayed and each woman composed a poem to go with their painting. Each painting was so unique - one woman was completely naked except for a feather boa; a dancer did the splits and the painting hangs horizontal instead of vertical. I enjoy the idea of painting you who you are just beyond 'who you are'- who you are becoming. Please comment and tell me how you would like to be painted. This one is of Kerry, a musician and music teacher on Cape Cod. Her poem is beautiful. After I completed the painting, I noticed that the way her arms are placed makes a shield of two intertwined hearts.

I am always the only one
I want to blend in
Be recognized as the same
-even similar
Or just as good
But everything I am is different
So I dress a little less ethnic
Wear my hair a little more plainly
Speak a little less openly
So as not call too much attention
But now
Look at me,
I am as life-size as any other.
And can be called all of the things some never thought I should be:
Feminine
Elegant
Calm
Classy
Intelligent
Exotic
An
Individual

A goddess in my own right.

Fritz's Marbles

I haven't had a chance to take the Baa Brothers to Fritz Glass yet, but you must go. He is an amazing glass blower and you can watch him work right there in his shop. Fritz and his wife, June, are very friendly too. Hillary Rodham Clinton decorated the White House Christmas tree with his glass.
It is a long walk or very short drive from Saturday Farm on Upper County Road.
Here's his link

Be kind to yourself and sweet dreams.

The Mermaid and the Dolphin

Here is the mermaid I painted for Island Cottage swimming with her friendly dolphin. {Yes, she is totally naked from the waist up :-). I had so many hits on my post about Harry's mom (see 'Totally Naked' ) I'm tempted to try another post with the same 2 words to see if the popularity was about my story, Harry's mom, or the words 'totally naked'. :-)) This mural is about 16 feet high and 20 or so feet wide. It took a lot of paint and I'm not done yet. I work on my murals whenever I'm in St. John. I hope you will plan to vacation at Island Cottage one day; then you can see her 'live' :-)..

The young lawyer (left) has a story on the back of her first case.
And... the teacher! In honor of the end of the school year!
